Cucurbita pepo L., commonly known as zucchini, is a plant of the Cucurbitaceae family, native to Mexico and now cultivated throughout the world. Although its fruits are widely consumed, the flowers of this plant are also gaining attention for their cosmetic value.

A group of researchers from the University of Naples conducted an in-depth analysis of the composition of these flowers, examining the glycolic extract obtained from freeze-dried flowers. The results revealed that these extracts are particularly rich in antioxidants such as rutin, quercetin, lutein and beta-carotene, i.e., molecules that protect the skin from oxidative stress.
Other in vitro studies have shown a significant reduction in free radicals and protection against damage caused by UVB rays. In addition, the extract has shown a positive effect on the reduction of the expression of MMP-1, a protein involved in photoaging, suggesting a potential anti-aging effect.
Not only that: the extract of pumpkin flowers has also demonstrated hydrating and skin barrier strengthening effects, in fact, a significant improvement in skin hydration and a reduction in transepidermal water loss were observed in a recent clinical study involving 40 women between the ages of 35 and 55. Participants who used an emulgel containing the extract showed an increase in skin hydration and a reduction in wrinkles after just two weeks of treatment.
Pumpkin flower extract is therefore proposed as a promising ingredient for anti-aging cosmetic products, with proven benefits against oxidative stress, UV damage and skin dehydration. With further research, it could become a fundamental component of numerous cosmetic treatments, capable of improving the health and appearance of the skin in a natural and effective way.
