Sustainable Cosmetics: Is It Possible?

In the current context, marked by profound climate and demographic changes, sustainability has become a priority that can no longer be postponed. The world of cosmetics is also called upon to review its production models, driven by increasingly aware consumers, who require products that are not only effective, but also safe and respectful of the environment and people. Sustainability, however, is not a simple concept: it is a complex balance between environmental impact, social responsibility and economic efficiency.

In this scenario, ecodesign establishes itself as an innovative and multidisciplinary approach, capable of integrating sustainability, safety and effectiveness from the early stages of product development. It involves designing by considering the entire life cycle: from the choice of raw materials - evaluating their origin, biodegradability and environmental impact - to production, packaging, distribution and post-use.

A significant example is represented by sunscreens, essential cosmetics for health, but often criticized for the negative impact that some UV filters can have on marine ecosystems. The challenge is therefore to create formulas that protect the skin without damaging the environment.

It is essential to distinguish between "natural" and "sustainable": not all natural ingredients are truly natural, especially if their extraction puts biodiversity at risk. An in-depth analysis of each phase of the process is therefore needed, supported by technologies and tools for assessing environmental impact.

Only through a holistic and scientific approach can cosmetics be developed that meet new ethical and environmental needs. A change that does not simply follow a trend, but represents a real cultural revolution for the sector.
